Upside Down Apple Crispies
Simple recipes with few ingredients are the best for making with children. When I saw this viral apple tart recipe on Tik Tok, I knew it would be perfect to make with kids.
What Makes This Recipe Great For Kids
- There are only four ingredients.
- It is sweetened only naturally with honey and apple.
- The bulk of this recipe is building and assembling, which children love.
- Puff pastry requires gentleness. It can’t be stretched or pushed too hard. This is a very important skill to learn in cooking and baking.
What To Look For In Puff Pastry
First you want to look for an “all butter” puff pastry. This means it’s made from real butter, instead of any nasty vegetable fat or margarine-like substance.
If you can, you can get spelt pastry too, which is not totally necessary, but if you are wanting to choose an option that isn’t white flour (that tastes the same), look for spelt or other less refined grains. This is the one I use, and it can be found at Harris Farm.
Upside Down Apple Crispies
The viral Tik Tok apple tart recipe, made upside down with just a few ingredients! Simple and easy to make.
Ingredients
- 1 small apple, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 sheet all-butter spelt puff pastry, defrosted
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
- Slice the apple into thin slices.
- Carefully slice the defrosted puff pastry into 12 squares.
- Place a dot of honey, about ½ teaspoon, on the lined tray. Top with 3-4 apple slices in a tightly layered pattern, allowing the honey to spread slightly underneath.
- Carefully place the puff pastry sheet over the top, gently pressing down on the edges to seal the edges. You want enough pressure so it is stuck to the baking paper, but not so much that it squashes or stretches the puff pastry.
- Brush the top with the beaten egg.
- Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly for 10 to 15 minutes before turning over and enjoying.
